Who’s in your circle?

In preparation for a move to Boston, I’ve been trying to get in that one last meeting with each of my little social circles, and I’ve been thinking about how we separate our friends into these groups, and choose what we share with each.

My  PR friends meet for martini infused dinners at which we are so loud we’ve forever banned restaurants with bad acoustics. I have my dog circle- we meet for coffee and canine dates in backyards across town. My foodie friends are always good for a last second lunch date or some blowout haute cuisine.  My high school friends recount tales of kids and job over email.

Then there’s my geek crew, who I know almost intimately over twitter and facebook,  who in some cases I only know because of twitter and facebook. They’re becoming my closest network: my go-to folks for referrals, meetups, networking and late night advice.

Amidst promises of emails and phone calls when I leave, I’ve begged even my least tech friendly friends to get in on facebook and twitter.  It forms a consistency that email and phone don’t. It will keep us on a day to day level; keep us conversational.

And thus, my friends stop being fractured and one of a much larger circle. What about you? Do you keep a separate life online? Would your seating chart feature tables with tags like “dog/work/HS/college” or can you friends mingle?
